Brooke Williamson Hands Out Free Holiday Meals At Playa Provisions To Restaurant Workers Today

In an effort to help the restaurant community, Top Chef winner and Playa Provisions owner Brooke Williamson, who has had to shutter three of her four restaurants due to the pandemic, will be handing out free holiday care packages today for restaurant industry workers. It will be first-come, first-served starting at noon in the parking lot at Playa Provisions until they run out – and of course, masks are mandatory.

At the same time, Williamson will unveil L.A. artist John Park’s Never Stop mural on the side of her remaining restaurant, which shows the chef surrounded by dozens of team members eager to get back to work. The process, and Williamson’s struggle, is documented in a 60 Second Doc, part of a cross-country campaign profiling the American spirit.

“This year has been so incredibly challenging to the restaurant industry and sadly we’ve got some pretty substantial obstacles standing in the way of our survival,” Williamson tells L.A. Weekly.  “But those that choose to make a career out of restaurant life do it not because it’s easy, but because providing for your community by doing what you love is just worth it. This mural is such a beautiful reminder of the what our industry is all about. We show up, we work hard, and we support one another.
“So much has been taken from us this year – our jobs, security, the ability to gather. As we approach the holidays, a time when so much of our joy is expressed with and around food, it breaks my heart to think many people will have to alter their celebrations because of lack of resources. Today we’ve put together 250 family meal kits of my favorite winter dishes – Braised Chicken Cassoulet and cornbread with maple butter. They’ll be available for pick-up at my restaurant for any service industry folks who would like to come by.”
